A dollar sign is not a comparable budget

Before comparing an overseas software quote, get the currency code and billing period in writing. USD, CAD and AUD share a dollar sign, but not the same value. A currency conversion also cannot fix different package scope.

Historical comparison

Use one reference period for both quotes. An annual average can help reconstruct a past budget or illustrate the conversion direction.

A purchase today

Obtain a current written quote and the actual bank or payment-provider conversion terms. Confirm spread, fees, taxes and when conversion happens.

One reference year, four currencies

The World Bank’s World Development Indicators series PA.NUS.FCRF, sourced from the IMF International Financial Statistics database, reports local currency units per US dollar, averaged over the reference period.

Keep four checks beside each quote

  1. Currency and period: record ISO currency code, monthly versus annual billing, quote date and expiry. Do not infer USD from “$”.
  2. Scope: match locations, cases, users, modules, setup and migration. Convert both starting and recurring costs consistently, without counting annual and monthly versions twice.
  3. Conversion basis: label the rate date, direction and source. For a current decision, replace this historical reference with your applicable payment terms.
  4. Unresolved items: keep taxes, payment fees, renewal currency and any unquoted amount visible. Conversion is not a way to make unknown charges disappear.

What to request from an overseas provider

“Please confirm the invoice currency, billing period, included scope and whether amounts include tax. If we pay in another currency, identify who converts it, when, and which fees apply. Quote setup separately and confirm the currency used at renewal.” Do not rank suppliers by a converted headline figure until these rows match.

The site’s existing calculator uses the amounts you enter; selecting a currency does not perform foreign-exchange conversion. This free guide does not change the scope of the paid review, which remains one anonymized English-language quote in USD for one provider and one operation.

Primary data: World Bank country observations; indicator definition and IMF provenance. Recheck the series before updating a historical comparison; obtain a current payment quote for a purchase. No live converter or new service is introduced.
